Understanding Dementia Training

'Understanding Dementia' - New training sessions for carers of people with dementia

For the first time Sunderland Carers' Centre will be offering carers who look after someone with dementia the following 'Understanding Dementia' sessions.  The session aims are:

  • To provide information in a structured and accessible way so carers increase their understanding of dementia
  • To increase confidence in accessing appropriate advice and support
  • To learn from other carers about their experiences and coping mechanisms in caring for someone with dementia

There are five sessions in total as detailed below.  The final session is particularly aimed at extended family and friends who may not be the main person providing care but still be involved in supporting the person with dementia and / or the main person providing care.


Session 1:

What is dementia?

Monday 20th February 2012



11am - 2pm

  • To introduce the full programme and the aims of the 4 sessions
  • To identify what the participants want from the sessions
  • To look at what dementia is, and find out more about the most common types

Session 2:

Brain, behaviour and memory

Monday 27th February 2012



11am - 2pm

  • To introduce the relationship between brain, behaviour and memory
  • To provide participants with an insight into what the brain is like
  • To understand the memory as a bookcase and how this helps to understand dementia

Session 3:

The ageing senses and the stages of dementia and communication

Monday 5th March 2012




11am - 2pm

  • To explore the importance of the impact of ageing on the senses of the person with dementia
  • To introduce the stages of dementia
  • To start to explore the key communication considerations for each stage

Session 4:

Communication and coping strategies for carers

Monday 12th March 2012



11am - 2pm

  • To continue to explore the key communication considerations for each stage
  • To explore the carers feelings about dementia
  • Positive pictures of the person with dementia
  • Next steps

Session 5:

Understanding Dementia for extended family and friends

Monday 26th March 2012

(This session is for extended family and friends of the carers who have already taken part in the first four sessions.)



11am - 2pm

  • To support carers and people with dementia by providing an opportunity for friends and family to learn more about dementia
  • To improve participants knowledge of dementia


All sessions take place at 'The Place', Athenaeum Street, Sunderland SR1 1QX.

All sessions include a break with light refreshments.  Funds to help with travel and alternative care are available for carers who need this.
