Carers raise £576 at Open Day towards Sunderland Carers’ Centre’s new premises
Carers in Sunderland helped raise £576 at the Carers’ Centre’s Open Day and Fundraising Event on Tuesday 17th May at its main base in Toward Road, opposite Mowbray Park. Although the building has been the main base for the charity for the last ten years, those attending were hoping to raise funds towards its newly refurbished premises in Thompson Park. After raising £13,000 the centre is about £20,000 away from reaching its target to make the move a reality.
Margaret Ridley, a volunteer at the centre and organiser of the event said “The carers have been absolutely fantastic, volunteering their precious time and donating so much to make the event such a fundraising success. They have made such beautiful crafts and baked such delicious food; I’m bowled over how creative and talented they all are!”
Eibhlin Inglesby, Operations Manager at the Centre said “The event today really proved to us how much carers want to get involved and to make the move to the new building happen. The building really belongs to all carers who use our services so it is important they have a safe, supportive and pleasant environment they can rely on for many years to come.”
Thank you to all the carers who volunteered their time as well as the carers who came along to make donations and to buy cakes, plants, raffle tickets etc.
If you would like to make a donation towards the funds needed for the new premises please contact Sunderland Carers’ Centre on (0191) 567 3232 or call into 12 Toward Road, Sunderland SR1 2QF.
Unpaid carers save £119 billion a year
New estimates, calculated by charity Carers UK and the University of Leeds, show the care provided by friends and family members to ill, frail or disabled relatives is now worth a staggering £119 billion every year.
• The figure has risen by over a third since the 2007 estimate, which stood at £87 billion.
• Carers’ contribution now far outstrips the total cost of the NHS (£98.8 billion).
• The figure amounts to £2.3 billion per week and £326 million per day.
New estimates show that there are around 6.4 million people in the UK providing care for ill or disabled loved ones that would otherwise cost the state £18 an hour, meaning that each carer saves an average £18,473 per year.
The 33,281 carers in the city of Sunderland save £706.9 million. The figure in 2007 was £539.5 million.
