Carers Coffee Evening

Come along for tea, coffee and a chat at our next coffee evening on:

Wednesday 4th June

6.30pm - 8.15pm

at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park

All carers welcome.

There will also be a speaker giving a talk on healthy eating and delicious smoothies for us all to try.

Disability Swim Session - Saturday 31st May

There is an exclusive use disability swim session on Saturday 31st May, 3.45pm - 4.45pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre for disabled children and their families.

The cost is £2.20 per person or family ticket £5.25 (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).

Do you enjoy gardening?  Join our Gardening Group

Members of the Garden GroupA group of carers help maintain and develop the Carers' Centre garden area (including the young carers' garden).

They are currently working to improve one particular area of the garden so carers will have their own space to relax.

They would like to welcome new volunteers to join them. No gardening experience is required.

The group will next meet on Wednesday 28th May, 12 noon - 1.30pm, to discuss the work to be done in the garden. They carry out the work whenever they get an hour or two of spare time or plan when they can work together as a group.

Carers Coffee Morning - Monday 19th May

The next coffee morning is on Monday 19th May, 10am - 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers' Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

Soroptimist International Sunderland funds confidence building course for young carers

Young carers at the Soroptimist International Sunderland AGMThank you to Soroptimist International Sunderland who have generously donated £1,100 to support young carers. The money raised will be used to run a course on emotional well-being and confidence building.

Soroptimist International Sunderland have supported Sunderland Carers' Centre not just financially but also through volunteering, sharing their skills, awareness raising and kind donations of items such as football tickets for the young people. The volunteer support will be on-going and they have shared some really great skills.

Speak Easy Course for Parent Carers

Sunderland Carers' Centre is running a Speak Easy Course for parent carers of disabled children aged under 18.

The course is designed to give you confidence to be able to know how to talk to your child about growing up, meet other parents in a similar situation to yourself and share ideas about supporting your child through adolescence.

The course will run from Thursday 22nd May, 1pm - 3pm, and every Thursday after until Thursday 17th July, 12.30pm - 3pm, at Houghton Primary Care Centre.

Disability Swim Session in Hetton

The next disability swim session for disabled children and their families will take place at Hetton Community Pool on Saturday 10th May, 3.30pm - 4.30pm (in the main pool).

The cost is £2.20 per person or family ticket £5.25 (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).

These swim sessions have been especially set up because parent carers asked to have sessions in different areas of the city. Please do go along if you can.


Bowling Taster Session for Carers and Cared for at North Biddick Bowling Club

North Biddick Bowling Club in Penshaw Park would like to invite carers and the people they care for to a free taster session on Tuesday 13th May, 12 noon - 2pm.

Why not go along and see what they have to offer. They will provide light refreshments and will have bowls and shoes available for people to use.

Carers Week Trip - Wednesday 11th June

To celebrate Carers Week (9-15 June) the Carers' Centre is organising a coach trip for carers to York on Wednesday 11th June.  This is great chance for carers to have a day to themselves and meet other carers.

The coach will depart from Toward Road bus stop next to Mowbray Park at 9.30am prompt and plans to arrive back at about 5.30pm. 

The cost is £4 per carer (non-refundable).  Please call into the Carers' Centre or phone (0191) 549 3768 from 9am Tuesday 6th May to book.  Places are limited.

Your place will be confirmed on payment of your £4.  Payment must be in cash (no cheques).  Please do not send cash in the post.  Payment must be received by Tuesday 27th May.  Carers must book individually (no block bookings) and must be over the age of 18.


Let's Challenge Disability

The Raich Carter Sports Centre is running a brand new class starting Tuesday 6th May called 'Let's Challenge Disability'.  It is a 1 hour class designed for anyone with a disability.

This class will be specially tailored to all needs and will be engaging, fun and lots of laughter whilst improving physical and mental health.

The class will run on a Tuesday afternoon 12 noon - 1pm for all ages.  There will be a qualified instructor who is trained in delivering fitness and good health to individuals with disabilities.

The class is £3.25 per person and carers will be free of charge.
