Sunderland, Washington and Coalfields Parent Carer Council logoParent Carer Information Day


Sunderland, Washington and Coalfields Parent Carer Council are organising a Parent Carer Information Day on Thursday 19th April, 10am – 1.30pm, at Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

The information stands will include Brainbox, Cerebra, Useful Vision, Scope, Contact a Family, HOPS amongst others. There will also be various workshops throughout the event (by the organisations sharing information).

More details will be released shortly and published on Facebook and the website www.swcpcc.org.uk. This is a free event and refreshments will also be available. If you wish to be kept informed via email, please send you details to swcpcc@googlemail.com


Sunderland City Council logoConsultation into services for adults and young people with Autism


Sunderland City Council wishes to consult with carers of people with Autism about service provision, gaps in service and suggestions for best practice so that the needs of people with Autism and their carers can be planned for the future.

If you are interested in giving your views there will be a consultation meeting from
11am - 12.30pm on Tuesday 17th April. The venue is to be arranged. If you would like to attend please contact Sunderland Carers’ Centre on (0191) 567 3232 for further details.


Caring with Confidence logoCaring with Confidence in Washington


If you have not done so already why not take part in the next round of Caring with Confidence sessions run by Sunderland Carers’ Centre. The sessions continue to be rated very highly by carers and nearly all say they would recommend them to other carers.

If you want to take part or just want to find out more why not come along to the ‘Finding Your Way’ introduction session on Thursday 17th May at Washington Primary Care Centre, Princess Anne Park, Park Way, Washington NE38 7QZ, from 11.30am to 2.30pm, with light refreshments.

ADHD Support Group


The Sunderland ADHD Support Group holds a coffee morning for parents of children with ADHD every fortnight on a Monday (except during school holidays), 11am – 1pm, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre. The group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. To find out the dates for the meetings in April please contact the Carers’ Centre on (0191) 567 3232.

Say thank you to workers who have supported you in your caring role by nominating them for the Caring for Carers Awards 2012. For example, a nurse, doctor, care worker, or a voluntary or community worker.

Please return nomination forms to the Carers’ Centre by Wednesday 9th May.

Please note this year we have changed the criteria and we will now not be able to accept nominations for workers from Sunderland Carers’ Centre.

All workers will receive a certificate. The awards and certificates will be presented during Carers Week.


Autism Friendly Film Screening – The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!


Dimensions have joined forces with Odeon Cinemas to host an autism friendly screening of the film The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists! in cinemas across the country.

What makes the screening autism friendly? The lights will be on low, the volume will be turned down, you’ll be able to take your own food and drinks and you’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like.

The nearest screening will be at the Metrocentre Odeon on Sunday 15th April at 11.30am. Tickets can be bought from the cinema or online through the Odeon website www.odeon.co.uk. For more information about autism-friendly screenings visit the Dimensions website www.dimensions-uk.org/autismfilms


Useful Vision logoUseful Vision Activities


Useful Vision helps vision impaired children and families in the North East get the most out of life. Families can register free to receive regular mailings about events by calling 0845 604 8491 or email office@usefulvision.org.uk. Forthcoming family events include:

• Outdoor activities at Wingate Woods, East Durham on Thursday 12th April,
11am – 2pm
• Family Fun Day at Hartlepool Historic Quay on Sunday 15th April, 11am – 3pm.
• Sensory Day at The Alan Shearer Activity Centre on Saturday 12th May,
10am – 12 noon and 1pm – 3pm
• Activities at Whickham Thorns Outdoor Activity Centre, Dunston, on Sunday 20th May, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Useful Vision Bounce Group


Useful Vision runs the Bounce Group which is an early years group for babies and toddlers who have vision impairment and disabilities. Parents meet and have a chat in the soft play area and chill with a music and movement session in the sensory room. Siblings are welcome too. Free tea and biscuits are available.

The next meetings will take place on Tuesday 1st May and Tuesday 12th May, 10am – 12 noon, at Silksworth Tennis and Wellness Centre, Silksworth Lane, Silksworth, Sunderland SR3 1PD. There will be soft play from 10am – 11am and music and movement from 11am – 12 noon. For more details ring 0845 604 8491 or email office@usefulvision.org.uk

Easter Craft Activities


Decorate an Easter/Spring storysack craft activity at the following libraries

Silksworth Library, Tuesday 3rd April, 2.30pm – 3.30pm
Doxford Park Library, Wednesday 4th April, 10.30am – 12 noon
Southwick Library, Friday 13th April, 2.30pm – 3.30pm

Dads ‘n’ Kids Club


The next Dads ‘n’ Kids Club will take place on Saturday 28th April, at City Library and Arts Centre, Fawcett Street, Sunderland, 10.30am – 11.30am. Fun craft session – come along and enjoy quality time together. The club is suitable for children 5 – 11 years and their father/carer. Mums also welcome!

Easter Holiday Activities (2nd – 13th April)


Sunderland Libraries will be holding family activities during the Easter holiday.
Children will be able to make a variety of Easter crafts including Easter decorations, 3D Easter characters, magnetic photo frames and Easter Bunny pom-poms.

Spring is also the perfect time for getting out and active in Sunderland. In preparation for getting out and about children can visit the library and design their own bike model, bike license plate or handlebar streamer.

All activities are free. Children under 8 years must be accompanied by an adult.

IBS Awareness Campaign
During April Sunderland Libraries will have a literature awareness raising display of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).

Courses for Adults
During the weeks commencing 6th and 23rd April a range of Summer courses for adults will begin. Family History, IT, Water Colours, and Creative Writing are an example of some of the courses taking place. For further information contact your nearest library during April.

World Book Night
Monday 23rd April is World Book Night and there will be Author events at various libraries and book giving activities. For further information contact your nearest library.
