Parent Carer Coffee Mornings

Sunderland Parent Carer Coffee Morning

Autism Friendly Film Screenings at Empire Cinema Sunderland


In celebration of National Autism Day the Empire Cinema Sunderland are introducing autism friendly screenings from April 2014.

These screenings will feature reduced sound levels, increased lighting and advert-free content to create a friendly, relaxed and unique experience. These screenings will be on weekends and also after school.

The first screenings are:

Wednesday 2nd April, 4pm, Muppets: Most Wanted

Sunday 6th April, 11.30am, Rio 2


Sunderland City Council logoFamily Fun Days at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre


There will be two family fun days for disabled children and their families over the Easter holidays at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre.

They will be on Wednesday 9th April and Wednesday 16th April:

Tennis Coaching Session 1: 9am – 9.45am
Tennis Coaching Session 2: 10am – 10.45am
Indoor Adventure Soft Play : 9am – 11am
Fun & Floats Swim Session: 10.15am – 11.15am

Price £2.90 per person (1 accompanying adult per young person is free).

No outdoor shoes, food or drinks other than bottled water permitted on tennis courts, in soft play or sensory room. Loose comfortable sportswear recommended. Lockers £1 deposit.

The next swim session for disabled children and their families at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre is on Saturday 26th April, 3.45pm – 4.45pm. Entry is £2.20 per person or family ticket £5.25 (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people). For more information please contact their reception on (0191) 561 5900.

New Disability Swim Sessions at Hetton Community Pool


A few months ago parent carers told the Carers’ Centre that they would like to have disability specific swim sessions in other parts of the city in addition to the ones that take place every month at Silksworth Community Pool.

We are pleased to let you know that from April there will also be a monthly swim session for disabled children and their families at Hetton Community Pool on the second Saturday of each month, 3.30pm – 4.30pm, in the Main pool.

The first session is on Saturday 12th April. The price is £2.20 per person or £5.25 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people).


Health Awareness Event - Tuesday 8th April


This free, fun event will help you find out about living a healthier lifestyle. It is at Thorney Close Action and Enterprise Centre on Tuesday 8th April, 10am – 1pm. There will be mini health checks, information and advice on health issues and children’s activities including a magician and balloon art.


Easter Fun Day - Thursday 10th April


There will be an Easter Fun Day organised by Gentoo on Thursday 10th April, 1pm – 4pm, at Rainton Meadows Arena. There will be lots of activities including giant snakes and ladders, easter sports, circus skills, crafts, balloon modelling, face painting, easter bonnets, easter egg hunts and much more.


ADHD Support Group


Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support.

The next meetings will be on Monday 7th April and Monday 28th April, 11.30am – 1pm, at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD.

Inclusion Youth Clubs


The following Inclusion Youth Clubs are for children aged 13 – 19 and have activities such as pool, football, arts and crafts, cooking, and computers and are a great opportunity to make new friends:

Hendon Young People Project (East area), Monday, 5.45pm – 8.15pm
Lambton Street Project (West area), Saturday, 1pm – 3.30pm
Redhouse Youth Project (North area), Thursday, 6pm – 8.30pm
Pitstop (Washington), Tuesday, 6pm – 8.30pm
Bungalows Youth Project (Fence Houses), Thursday, 6.30pm – 8.30pm

Transition Support Group


The next meeting of the Transition Support Group will take place on Thursday 24th April, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF.

The group is open to all parents / carers of young people going through transition from children’s services to adult services.

Useful VisionUseful Vision Activities


Useful Vision helps families with blind or sight impaired children get the most out of life. They run fun activities for children from 0 to 19 across the region. All the activities are free to families registered with them. They welcome children whatever their level of ability or additional needs. Join them during April.

Gallery tour and art session at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), Saturday 5th April, 10.30am – 12 noon or 12.30pm – 2pm.

Teambuilding and skills workshop, Skills4U, Cramlington, Tuesday 8th April and Wednesday 9th April, 10am – 3pm. Suitable for children aged 8 and over.

Sensory story time and exhibition, Seven Stories, Newcastle, Thursday 10th April, 10am – 1pm.

Easter Family Social Day, Blue Flames Sporting Club, Newcastle, Sunday 13th April, 1pm – 4pm.

Climbing at Rockantics, Newton Aycliffe, Tuesday 15th April, 11am – 12.30pm. For children aged 4 and over.

Family Bowling Session, Starbowl, Royal Quays, Wednesday 16th April, 1.30pm – 4.30pm.

Family Day at Hall Hill Farm, Lanchester, Co. Durham, Sunday 27th April, 11am – 3pm.
