Parent Carer Information Bulletin August 2012

Welcome to this month’s information bulletin for parents and carers of disabled children.


Parent Carers’ Group

There will be no meeting in August. The next meeting will take place on

Thursday 13th September
11am – 1pm
at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF

11am – 12 noon at the Carers’ Centre
12 noon – 1pm at The Mill (opposite the Carers’ Centre) for lunch
£4.95 for a 2 course lunch per person.

Parent Carer Coffee Morning

There will be no coffee mornings in August. The next coffee morning will take place on

10am – 12 noon
Houghton Primary Care Centre (behind Houghton Leisure Centre)

Please note there will be no more coffee mornings at Sunningdale School.

Sunderland Carers' CentreSunderland Carers’ Centre Official Launch Party


Life has been pretty hectic since moving to the new premises at Thompson Park in April. Now staff are settled in we are delighted to invite carers to our official launch party on Wednesday 29th August, 10.30am – 2pm. Come and see the new garden, take part in competitions, enjoy a buffet lunch and be entertained by a steel band performance. If we need to escape the weather there will be indoor activities too. No need to book – just turn up on the day.

The new premises are at Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1SF located on Thompson Road to the left of the main park entrance gates. We are on the opposite side of the road to the Total Garage and the Wearmouth Colliery Welfare Sports and Social Club.

Transition – a date for your diary


Has your son or daughter recently gone through transition or are they in the process of doing so now? Transition is a very important time in a young person’s life and can be very stressful for parents.

If you would like to come and have a coffee and a chat about how things are for you at present and meet other parents in similar situations we are holding a coffee morning at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, on Thursday 20th September, 10.30am – 12 noon. We hope to make these regular events that give carers mutual support and a bit of relaxation. We look forward to seeing you.

Living with Autism in Sunderland consultation


The Local Autism Working Group and Sunderland City Council are asking people with Autism and their families about their experiences of living with Autism, the services and support people use, what is good about them and what needs to improve.

If you care for an adult or a child with Autism take part by completing a short survey - click here

The consultation closes on 10th August.


Playgroup for hearing impaired children


Does your child have hearing loss? Do you want to meet other families in the same situation? Then join the parent and toddler group for all pre-school children with a hearing impairment. It’s a chance for the children to enjoy lots of activities including outside play and for parents to have a chat over a cuppa. The group meets at Fingerpaint Nursery, Ryhope, Sunderland SR2 0LW, every fortnight on a Monday, 1 – 3pm. For meeting dates please email lynndryden@dsl.pipex.com


Autism Friendly Film Screening – Dr Seuss’ The Lorax


Dimensions have joined forces with Odeon Cinemas to host an autism friendly screening of the animation film Dr Seuss’ The Lorax (U, 2D) in cinemas across the country.

What makes the screening autism friendly? The lights will be on low, the volume will be turned down, you’ll be able to take your own food and drinks and you’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like.

The nearest screening will be at the Metrocentre Odeon on Sunday 12th August at 11.30am. Tickets can be bought from the cinema, online through the Odeon website www.odeon.co.uk or by calling Odeon’s Accessibility Helpline on 0800 138 3315 between 11am and 8pm.

Cinema Exhibitors Association (CEA) Card


The CEA Card is issued by The Card Network. The card entitles the card holder to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema, provided a full price ticket is purchased for the card holder. You can apply for the card if you receive Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance or registered as a blind person. The card is issued to the person who requires assistance to enjoy the cinema. In this way, there is no restriction on the accompanying person, family, friend, care worker etc. as long as they are capable of offering the required assistance and are aged 16 or over. The latest edition of The Rough Guide to Accessible Britain is available free online. It includes ideas for days out, reviews, hints and tips by disabled visitors and accessibility information including disabled parking. The website also has a section on Family Days Out with reviews of family friendly attractions.

Activities at Sunderland’s Leisure Centres


As part of the ‘Sunderland in 2012’ programme every day between Friday 27th July and Sunday 12th August inclusive there will be 2,012 free activity places across all the city’s leisure centres. Each of the centres will also be giving you the chance to try activities for only £2.12 between Saturday 21st July and Sunday 2nd September inclusive. There will also be a free open weekend Friday 17th August to Sunday 19th August – see below.

Free Open Weekend at Leisure Centres


From Friday 17th August to Sunday 19th August there will be free sessions taking place at all of the following leisure centres:

• Hetton Community Pool and Wellness Centre
• Houghton Sports Centre
• Silksworth Sports Complex and Ski Slope
• Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre
• Sunderland Aquatic Centre
• Washington Leisure Centre

Free activities will include swimming, skiing, snowboarding, taekwondo, table tennis, trampolining and much more.

Storysack sessions


Decorate a colourful storysack to take home on Thursday 2nd August, 2 – 3pm, at Shiney Row Library and Tuesday 14th August, 2.30 – 3.30pm, at City Library and Arts Centre. Sessions are free and suitable for children 2 – 12 years and their parent/carer.

Story Lab Summer Reading Challenge, 21 July – 1 September


Children in Sunderland are invited to take part in the free Summer Reading Challenge at their nearest library. This year’s theme is Story Lab – a hi-tech HQ that attracts stories from all over the world and sends them spinning throughout the city and beyond! Story Lab will be divided into three stages: bronze, silver and gold. Children are encouraged to read books over the summer and collect incentives at each stage. On completion, children will receive a medal and certificate. Children and families can also take part in free Story Lab themed craft activities at their nearest library.
