Parent Carers Christmas Meal


There is still time to book your place at our Christmas get-together and lunch on Wednesday 4th December at 12 noon at The Stables, Beamish Hall Country House Hotel. The 18th century stable block is set in 24 acres of wooded parkland in the picturesque village of Beamish, County Durham. All parent carers are welcome to join us. If you have problems with transport please let us know and we can arrange to car share. Please book your place by ringing the Carers’ Centre on (0191) 549 3768. A deposit of £5 would be appreciated but not vital and we are able to choose from the Christmas lunch menu on the day (please see below). We hope you can join us to celebrate the festive season.

South of Tyne and Wearside Deaf Children’s Society Christmas Party


South of Tyne and Wearside Deaf Children’s Society is holding a Christmas Party on Sunday 8th December, 4pm – 6pm, at Castle View Community and Fitness Centre, Cartwright Road, Sunderland SR3 3DX. It includes bouncy castle, football, music, face painting, food and a visit from Santa Claus and is for all families with hearing impaired children and their siblings. The next disability specific swim sessions will take place on Saturday 30th November and Saturday 21st December, 4pm – 5pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre. The price is £2.10 per person or £5 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people). For more information please contact their reception on (0191) 561 5900.

There will be two special swim sessions over the Christmas holidays for disabled children and their families at Silkworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre on Monday 23rd December and Monday 30th December, both 12.15pm – 1.15pm. Entry is £2.10 per person (carer free of charge). For more information please contact their reception on

Transition Support Group


The next meeting of the Transition Support Group will take place on Thursday 28th November, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF. The group is open to all carers of young people going through transition from children’s services to adult services. For more information please contact Helen McAdam on (0191) 549 3768. The group will not meet in December.


ADHD Support Group


Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. The next meeting will be on Monday 2nd December, 11.30am – 1pm, at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD. This will be the last meeting before Christmas. Sunderland Empire – Relaxed Performance of Cinderella


Sunderland Empire is holding a relaxed performance of their family pantomime, Cinderella on Friday 3rd January at 2.30pm. It will cater specifically for families and people with learning and behavioural disorders such as autism, by creating a more relaxed atmosphere. For example, possible changes could be made to lower the sound and dim the lights; no one will be asked to be quiet; audiences can come and go as they please; quiet space will be available during the performance, with activities and fidget toys; and pre-show familiarisation visits are available. Autism Friendly Film Screenings at Cineworld Boldon


Cineworld Boldon offers autism friendly film screenings on the first Sunday of every month at 11am. Autism friendly screenings differ from regular screenings, for example: lighting will be kept on during the screening; volume levels will be reduced; there will be no advertisements or trailers; seating will not be allocated; and customers will be allowed to bring in their own food. The next screening will be the animated film, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 (U, 2D), on Sunday 1st December, at 11am. Tickets can be bought from the cinema, online - click here - or by calling

Useful Vision logoUseful Vision Activities


Useful Vision helps families with blind or sight impaired children get the most out of life. They run fun activities for children from 0 to 19 across the region. All the activities are free to families registered with them. They welcome children whatever their level of ability or additional needs. Join them during December.

Bounce baby and toddler group. Tuesday 3rd December, 10am – 12 noon. Drop in and meet other parents and have a chat then chill in the music and movement session with Piccolo Music. Siblings are welcome too.

Panto time! Centre for Life, Newcastle. Saturday 14th December, 1pm – 4pm. Join the Useful Vision families for The Panto Company’s production of Robinson Crusoe, where the children can get close to the players and join in the fun!
