Parent Carer Information Bulletin July 2014

Welcome to this month’s information bulletin for parents and carers of disabled children.


Parent Carer Coffee Mornings

There will be no Coffee Mornings during the summer months due to the school holidays.

The next meetings will be in September.


Parent Carer Summer Meal

There will be a summer meal on

Tuesday 15th July
12 noon
at The Mill, Thompson Road, Sunderland

Summer Streets Bunting Making Session

Coming to the summer meal on Tuesday 15th July?

Why not join us at the Carers’ Centre at 10.30am and help make bunting to decorate the Summer Streets festival.

The Summer Streets music festival takes place on Saturday 19th July in Thompson Park and you will see your bunting on the stages, tents etc.

The bunting making session is free and it will be an opportunity to have fun before we go for our meal.

Sunderland City Council logoWeekend Short Break Sessions


Places are available for disabled young people aged 13 – 18 years at these sessions:

Blue Watch – sessions are free and are held on a Saturday morning at Blue Watch Youth Centre in Ryhope between 9.45am – 12.45pm each fortnight. Activities include trips to the beach, park, stables and bike rides as well as pamper days, cooking, playing pool and much more.

Sportworks – sessions are free and are held on a Saturday afternoon at Monkwearmouth School in Monkwearmouth between 1.30pm – 4.30pm each fortnight. Activities include trips to the park, beach and museums, as well as swimming, basketball, team games and much more.

ADHD Support Group


Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support.

The next meeting will be on Monday 14th July, 11.30am – 1pm, at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD. This will be the last one before there is a break for the school holidays.

Sunderland City Council logoDisability Swim Session – Silksworth Community Pool


The next swim session for disabled children and their families at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre is on Saturday 26th July, 3.45pm – 4.45pm. Entry is £2.20 per person or family ticket £5.25 (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people). For more information please contact their reception on (0191) 561 5900.

Please note there will be no more swim sessions at Hetton Community Pool due to low attendance. Please do go along to the Silksworth sessions.

Transition Support Group


The next meeting of the Transition Support Group will be on Thursday 31st July, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre. The group is open to all parents / carers of young people going through transition from children’s services to adult services. Social Inclusion Youth Projects


There are five youth projects for young people aged 13 to 19 years with learning difficulties and disabilities. These projects offer different activities to meet the needs of the individual young person. The projects are:

Hendon Young People Project, Church Street East, Hendon, Sunderland SR1 2BB

Fence Houses YMCA, 67 Front Street, Colliery Row, Houghton-le-Spring DH4 6LP
Thursday 6pm – 8.30pm

Redhouse Youth Project, Rutherglen Road, Redhouse, Sunderland SR5 5LN
Thursday 6pm – 8.30pm

Pitstop (Oxclose Young People’s Project), The Avenue, Glebe NE37 2ET
Tuesday 6pm – 8.30pm

Lambton Street Youth Project, Falkland Road, Pallion, Sunderland SR4 6XA
Saturday 1.15pm – 3.45pm

Dance and Drama Club


The North East Autism Society holds a free dance and drama club every Saturday at the North East Centre for Autism, Cedar Drive, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham DL5 6UN. The group for 8’s and under is 10am – 10.45am and older children 11am – 12.30pm. The club welcomes children and young people with autism and any other special needs. TING – Thorney Individual Needs Group


Thorney Individual Needs Group holds drop in sessions to support families and carers of children with additional needs twice a month on a Tuesday morning, 10am – 11.30am, at Thorney Close Children’s Centre, Thorndale Road, Thorney Close, Sunderland. The group provides: an informal meeting place for families to meet other families with similar issues; help and support with issues such as toileting, behaviour, sleep and feeding; information on benefits, funds and services that are available; a play space and activities to enable parents and carers to attend with their children if they wish to do so; a listening ear and a cuppa. Useful Vision logoUseful Vision Activities


Useful Vision helps families with blind or sight impaired children get the most out of life. They run fun activities for children from 0 to 19 across the region. All the activities are free to families registered with them. Join them during June.

Family Activity Day, Newburn, Sunday 6th July, 10am – 4.30pm.

Dance and Drama Taster Session, Durham, Wednesday 23rd July, 10am – 12 noon.

Family Day at Hartlepool Maritime Experience, Sunday 27th July, 10.30am – 4pm.

Family Day at Woodhorn Colliery, Northumberland, Wednesday 30th July, 10.30am – 2.30pm.
