Playgroup for hearing impaired children


Does your child have hearing loss? Do you want to meet other families in the same situation? Then join the parent and toddler group for all pre-school children with a hearing impairment.

Where: Fingerpaint Nursery, Ryhope, Sunderland SR2 0LW.
When: Monday, 1 – 3pm, every fortnight.
What happens: A chance for the children to enjoy lots of activities including outside play and for parents to have a chat over a cuppa.

Playgroup dates: 11th and 25th June, 9th July.

Autism Friendly Film Screening – Men In Black 3


Dimensions have joined forces with Odeon Cinemas to host an autism friendly screening of Men In Black 3 (PG, 2D) in cinemas across the country.

What makes the screening autism friendly? The lights will be on low, the volume will be turned down, you’ll be able to take your own food and drinks and you’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like.

The nearest screening will be at the Metrocentre Odeon on Sunday 17th June at 11.30am. Tickets are on sale now and can be bought from the cinema, online through the Odeon website www.odeon.co.uk or by calling Odeon’s Accessibility Helpline on 0800 138 3315 between 11am and 8pm.

Cinema Exhibitors Association (CEA) Card


The CEA Card is issued by The Card Network. The card entitles the card holder to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema, provided a full price ticket is purchased for the card holder. You can apply for the card if you receive Disability Living Allowance or Attendance Allowance or registered as a blind person. The card is issued to the person who requires assistance to enjoy the cinema. In this way, there is no restriction on the accompanying person, family, friend, care worker etc. as long as they are capable of offering the required assistance and are aged 16 or over. ADHD Support Group


Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? Would you like to meet other parents? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. If you are interested in joining the group please contact Sunderland Carers’ Centre on (0191) 549 3768.

Netbuddy has been working with NHS Carers Direct to pass on practical advice, tips and ideas from carers of people with learning disabilities to other carers.

‘Real tips from real carers’ offers a selection of tips submitted by carers under

four separate headings – Communication, Healthcare, Personal Hygiene, Behaviour and Routine.

Diamond Jubilee 'Faberge' Craft Activity

Come along and make a Jubilee Faberge Egg and your own Crown Jewels to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on Friday 1st June, 2.30pm - 3.30pm, at the City Library and Arts Centre.

This is a family activity for children to enjoy with their parents, grandparents or carers.

Diamond Jubilee Crafts

Come along and celebrate the Diamond Jubilee at the City Library and Arts Centre on Wednesday 6th June and Friday 8th June, 2.30pm - 3.30pm.

Enter the Queen's Portrait competition, make a mini replica of the Crown Jewels or design a Jubilee plate.

This is a family activity for children to enjoy with their parents, grandparents or carers.

National Bookstart Week (11 – 17 June 2012)


All libraries in Sunderland will be holding a bear story and rhymetimes to help celebrate National Bookstart Week. Bring along your favourite teddy bear to join in the fun!

This activity is free and suitable for preschool children and their parent/carer. Please ring (0191) 561 1235 or your local library for individual dates and times of sessions.

During the month of June Sunderland Libraries will have information displays regarding Men’s Health.


What’s on… there’s loads happening in Sunderland this Summer


The packed programme includes events to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee year and a host of activities to give you the chance to take part in, watch or support the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

There are events and festivals including the Sunderland International Airshow, Sunderland Festival and Sunderland in 2012 celebratory event, as well as music and movies in the parks.

There is something for everyone and most events are free.
