1st BowlParent Carer Summer Outing – Wednesday 10th July

Join us on Wednesday 10th July at 11am for bowling at 1st Bowl, High Street West, (Sunniside), River Quarter, Sunderland, SR1 1TR, then for lunch at Sambucas restaurant, Wylam Wharf, Low Street, Sunderland SR1 2JR.

This should cost no more than £10 per person (£1.50 per person for a game, and £3.99 for a special 3 course meal). Parking is free in Sunniside car park, when you stamp your ticket at 1st Bowl.

Transition Support Group

The next meeting of the Transition Support Group will take place on Thursday 27th June, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF. The group is open to all carers of young people going through transition from children’s services to adult services. Sunderland City Council logoLifespan Team

Adult and Children’s Services are merging together to become the Lifespan Team. The Carers’ Centre has been asked to get your views about what parent carers would find helpful and useful and any questions parent carers may have about the team. Disability Specific Swim Sessions

The next disability specific swim session will take place on Saturday 29th June, 4pm – 5pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre. The price is £2.10 per person or £5 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people). For more information please contact their reception on (0191) 561 5900.

Disabled Children and Families Summer Holiday Sessions

There will Summer Holiday Sessions for disabled children and their families at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre on Wednesday’s July 24th and 31st and August 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th. Indoor adventure soft play, 11am – 12 noon, Sensory room, 10am – 12 noon, Fun and floats swim session, 10am – 11am. Price £2.70 per young person. Accompanying adult or carer goes free of charge. Story Book, Boldon Leisure Park

Every Monday, 6pm – 8pm, the Story Book at Boldon Leisure Park, Abingdon Way, Boldon Colliery NE35 9PB has activities for children with special needs and their families. Brothers and sisters are welcome too. The cost is £3.50 for the first child then £1.50 for each additional child and includes juice and biscuits. Activities include soft play, crafts, etc. No need to book. For more information please contact (0191) 536 9408.

Mini Mix It Days – Dancing, Singing and Acting

This parentally led group, based in Annfield Plain, offers a Saturday stage school for children with disabilities aged 5+ and has a free taster day on Saturday 8th June, 10am – 12 noon. For more information email or phone 07768250159.

ADHD Support Group

Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. The group meets fortnightly. The next meetings are on Mondays 3rd, 17th and 24th June, from 11.30am – 1pm at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD. Have you a child or young person between the ages of 0 – 25 years with a disability, either physical or mental? Then Sunderland, Washington and Coalfields Parent Carer Council (SWCPCC) would like you to join them.

SWCPCC are parent carers and grandparents who volunteer their time to create change, so all their children and young people can learn, make friends, have a voice and be part of everyday community and school life.

‘Disabled children and their transition into adulthood: the law and good practice’

Cerebra is holding this event on Wednesday 26th June, 9.30am – 3pm, at the Life Conferencing and Banqueting (Darwin Suite), Times Square, Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4EP. It is £10 for parents and carers; £25 for professionals (non-refundable). The event aims to provide attendees with an overview of the legal responsibilities of local authorities and NHS bodies to ensure that the social care, education and health care needs of disabled children are fully addressed and sustained as they move into adulthood. Useful Vision logoUseful Vision Activities

The following activities have been arranged for families in the North East who have children with a visual impairment:

Bounce baby and toddler group. Drop in and meet other parents and have a chat then chill in the music and movement session with Piccolo Music. Siblings are welcome too. Tuesday 4th June, 10am – 12 noon, Silksworth Tennis and Wellness Centre.

Family Fun Day at Alnwick Garden, Northumberland. Opportunity to make kites, herb bags and bath bombs and to join in Jamie Oliver’s inspired Ministry of Food workshop. Free entry to the gardens. Sunday 2nd June, 11am – 3pm.

Makaton beginners 2 day workshop, provided with the support of Cerebra. For parents and carers who need to use Makaton in everyday situations. Signing instruction is given for Stages 1 - 4 plus some additional signs to help in practical situations. The Beacon, West Road, Newcastle, Friday 7th and 14th June, 9.30am – 2.30pm.

Animal Story Telling (with live animals!) for the younger children at Stockton Library. Stay for coffee and chat afterwards. Saturday 8th June, 11am – 12.30pm.

Messy creative play session with Squiggles n Giggles, Killingworth. Saturday 15th June, 10.30am – 11.30am.

Work out session at David Lloyd, Newcastle. Learn how to use their state of the art gym equipment safely with David Lloyd instructors. Join an exercise class in the studio. Age limit 11 and over. Afternoon Sunday 23rd June.

The Alan Shearer Activity Centre

The Alan Shearer Activity Centre is a specialist recreational, sensory and social resource which is open daily to children and adults with complex disabilities and acute sensory impairments. It is located at West Denton Close, Newcastle-upon-Tyne NE15 7LU. Facilities are completely free to use and include a hydrotherapy suite, sensory rooms and cave, a giant ball pool, a music room, arts and crafts, seasonal activities and a café. Overhead tracking and hoists are fitted throughout, enabling full accessibility to all areas for those with limited mobility. Family Puppet Making Sessions
Bring some old patterned material (or a garment) to make hand puppet clothing and a shoe box to make a puppet theatre. For family members (adult and child) to work together. Places are free. To book contact the participating library:

Materialistics Group Knitted Storybook Character Exhibition
Visit the story corner of the City Library to see this exhibition of fabulous knitted story book characters loaned by the Materialistics Group. Stories on show include the Very Hungry Caterpillar, Little Red Riding Hood, Cockatoos, the Jungle Book and Beatrix Potter characters.  The exhibition runs until Tuesday 25th June.

Dads ‘n’ Kids Club
Saturday 22nd June, 10.30am – 11.30am, at City Library and Arts Centre. Stories and singing for children up to 12 years and their parent / carer. Mums are welcome! No need to book. Free. For more information contact the City Library on (0191) 561 1235.

Keith Gregson - Stories and Singing

Suitable for primary aged children and their parent/carer.  All children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by an adult.

National Bookstart Week
24 – 30 June is National Bookstart Week. The theme will be “Fairytales”. Each Sunderland library will hold a story or rhyme session in this week suitable for preschool children. Please contact your local library for further details closer to the date.

Half-Term Holidays - Children's Craft Activities

Books on Wheels

Sunderland Public Libraries offer a Home Delivery Service providing books and audio items to customers who are unable to get to a library themselves.
