Caring with Confidence logoCaring with Confidence in Washington

Caring with Confidence is a series of free local group sessions for carers over 18. The sessions help carers to make a positive difference to their life and that of the person they care for. Some of the themes range from handling emotions, looking after your own health to dealing effectively with professionals.

The next round of Caring with Confidence sessions will take place at the Washington Primary Care Centre, Princess Anne Park, Park Way, Washington NE38 7QZ (next to the Galleries shopping centre). The introduction session, ‘Finding Your Way’, will be on Thursday 17th May, 11.30am – 2.30pm. At this session carers will be able to choose the other sessions they want to attend.

The Co-operative Membership logoCaring for Carers Awards 2012

There is still time to say thank you to workers who have supported you in your caring role by nominating them for the Caring for Carers Awards 2012. For example, a nurse, doctor, care worker, or a voluntary or community worker (not workers from Sunderland Carers’ Centre).

All workers will receive a certificate. The awards and certificates, sponsored by The Co-operative Membership, will be presented during Carers Week.

Play Group for hearing impaired children

Does your child have a hearing loss? Do you want to meet other families in the same situation?

Then join the parent and toddler group for all pre-school children with a hearing impairment.

The group meets at Fingerpaint Nursery, Ryhope, Sunderland SR2 0LW, every fortnight on a Monday, 1 – 3pm. It is a chance for the children to enjoy lots of activities including outside play and for parents to have a chat over a cuppa.

ADHD Support Group

Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? Would you like to meet other parents? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. If you are interested in joining the group please contact Sunderland Carers’ Centre on (0191) 549 3768.

Sunderland, Washington and Coalfields Parent Carer Council logoLeisure Event Report

A report is now available from the recent Sunderland, Washington and Coalfields Parent Carer Council event on leisure held at the Stadium of Light.

The report was compiled from the evaluation sheets completed by attendees and from comments during the table discussions.

Sunderland Actionnaires

Sunderland Actionnaires offers a range of activities for visually impaired children. The club meets every first and third Saturday of the month from 10am until 12 noon at The Raich Carter Sports Centre, Commercial Road, Hendon, Sunderland SR2 8PD.

If you would like your child to attend you must complete a joining form available from Lisa Simpson at Action for Blind People North East Tel: (01642) 233439 or email Lisa is also happy to arrange for families to visit the group prior to joining to see what it involves – please contact Lisa to arrange this.

Activities for the next three months are as follows

Saturday 19th May, 10am – 12 noon, Cricket with coach from Durham Cricket Board
Saturday 2nd June, 10am – 12 noon, Football, Sunderland Foundation Coach
Saturday 16th June, 10am – 12 noon, Olympic Torch event at Herrington Country Park
Saturday 7th July, 10am – 12 noon, Multi-sports and swim session
Saturday 21st July, 10am – 12 noon, Archery Massive Attack, Opposite Sharpley Hall Farm, Seaton, Seaham, County Durham SR7 0NP

All activities take place at The Raich Carter Sports Centre unless stated otherwise. Bookings must be received at least one week prior to the sessions.

National Share Month

May is National Share Month – a story month to encourage all parents/carers to snuggle down with their young child and share a story together. Libraries will be holding free story time sessions. Contact your local library for further information.

Dads ‘n’ Kids Club

The next Dads ‘n’ Kids Club will take place on Saturday 19th May, at City Library and Arts Centre, Fawcett Street, Sunderland, 10.30am – 11.30am. Come along and enjoy quality time together and be entertained by Lynn McAdam with special stories and rhymes. The session is free and will be most suitable for children up to the age of seven. Mums also welcome!

Party / Jubilee Storysack Craft Sessions

Come along and design a bag to take your library books home at

Houghton Library, Wednesday 30th May, 10.30am – 11.30am
Bunnyhill Library, Thursday 31st May, 10.30am – 11.30am

Both sessions are suitable for preschool children and their parent/carer.

Information Displays on walks and stroke

During the month of May Sunderland Libraries will have information displays regarding walks in and around Sunderland and Stroke Awareness Day.

Autism Friendly Film Screening – Beauty and the Beast

Dimensions have joined forces with Odeon Cinemas to host an autism friendly screening of the re-released Disney classic Beauty and the Beast (U, 2D) in cinemas across the country.

What makes the screening autism friendly? The lights will be on low, the volume will be turned down, you’ll be able to take your own food and drinks and you’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like.

The nearest screening will be at the Metrocentre Odeon on Sunday 13th May at 11.30am. Tickets will be on sale from Wednesday 9th May and can be bought from the cinema, online through the Odeon website or by calling Odeon’s Accessibility Helpline on 0800 138 3315 between 11am and 8pm.
