Parent Carers Christmas Meal

We have arranged our Christmas get-together and lunch for Wednesday 4th December at 12 noon at The Stables, Beamish Hall Country House Hotel. The 18th century stable block is set in 24 acres of wooded parkland in the picturesque village of Beamish, County Durham. All parent carers are welcome to join us. If you have problems with transport please let us know and we can arrange to car share. Please book your place by ringing the Carers’ Centre on (0191) 549 3768. A deposit of £5 would be appreciated but not vital and we are able to choose from the Christmas lunch menu on the day (please see below). We hope you can join us to celebrate the festive season.

Wills and Trusts Session

The Carers’ Centre is organising a session for parent carers on wills and trusts to be held on Monday 10th February 2014, 10am – 12 noon, at Houghton Primary Care Centre, Brinkburn Crescent, Houghton-le-Spring DH4 5HB. South of Tyne and Wear Deaf Children’s Society

South of Tyne and Wear Deaf Children’s Society are holding a Phonak Technology Day on Saturday 23rd November, 10am – 12 noon, at Southwick Community Primary School, Shakespeare Street, Sunderland SR5 2JX. There will be a phonak representative present with equipment and accessories for you to try out and purchase if you wish. This is an opportunity to ask the professionals questions regarding advances in hearing technology such as radio aids (fm systems). There will also be activities for the children to join in with in the school hall, while parents speak to the staff from phonak. To book your place email

Sunderland City Council logoDisability Specific Swim Session

The next disability specific swim session will take place on Saturday 30th November, 4pm – 5pm, at Silksworth Community Pool, Tennis and Wellness Centre. The price is £2.10 per person or £5 for a family ticket (maximum 2 adults and 2 young people). For more information please contact their reception on (0191) 561 5900.

Transition Support Group

The next meetings of the Transition Support Group will take place on Thursday 31st October and Thursday 28th November, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland

SR5 1SF. The group is open to all carers of young people going through transition from children’s services to adult services. For more information please contact Helen McAdam on (0191) 549 3768.

ADHD Support Group

Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. The next meeting will be on Monday 4th November, 11.30am – 1pm, at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD. This will be the last meeting before Christmas. Autism Friendly Film Screenings at Cineworld Boldon

Cineworld Boldon is now offering autism friendly film screenings on the first Sunday of every month at 11am.

Autism friendly screenings differ from regular screenings, for example: lighting will be kept on during the screening; volume levels will be reduced; there will be no advertisements or trailers; seating will not be allocated; and customers will be allowed to bring in their own food.

The next screening will be the animated film, Turbo (U, 2D), on Sunday 3rd November, at 11am.

Cinema Exhibitors Association (CEA) Card

The CEA Card is issued by The Card Network. The card entitles the card holder to one free ticket for a person accompanying them to the cinema, provided a full price ticket is purchased for the card holder. You can apply for the card if you receive Disability Living Allowance, Attendance Allowance, Personal Independence Payment, Armed Forces Independence Allowance or are registered as blind. The card is issued to the person who requires assistance to enjoy the cinema. In this way there is no restriction on the accompanying person, family, friend, care worker etc. as long as they are capable of offering the required assistance and are aged 16 or over. Useful Vision logoUseful Vision Activities

Useful Vision helps families with blind or sight impaired children get the most out of life. They run fun activities for children from 0 to 19 across the region. All the activities are free to families registered with them. They welcome children whatever their level of ability or additional needs. Join them during November and December.

Bounce baby and toddler group. Tuesday 5th November and 3rd December, 10am – 12 noon. Drop in and meet other parents and have a chat then chill in the music and movement session with Piccolo Music. Siblings are welcome too.

Behind the Scenes at The Great North Museum, Newcastle. Saturday 9th November, 10am – 12 noon. A unique opportunity to handle the artifacts – old bones, skin and fur and figure out which creepy creature they belong to. Try on old Greek armour and feel how heavy it really is. Create your own animals using feathers, leaves and other tactile materials.

Christmas Song and Recording Session, Soundscapes, North Shields. Saturday 16th November, 10am – 12.30pm or 1pm – 3.30pm. Merry Xmas everyone! A chance to record this Slade classic which will be professionally re-mixed and recorded onto CDs for the children to take away. For children aged 7 and over. Limited spaces.

Messy creative play session with Squiggles n Giggles, Killingworth. Saturday 23rd November, 10.30am – 11.30am.

Multi-sport Day, Walker Dome, Newcastle. Saturday 30th November, 12 noon – 4pm. A chance to try a range of racquet and ball sports for all ages and abilities. Join a Goalball taster session. Receive expert instruction in the Shokk gym, specifically designed gym equipment for children aged 8 and over. Book a slot in the sensory room. Bring a packed lunch or use the on-site café.

Panto time! Centre for Life, Newcastle. Saturday 14th December, 1pm – 4pm. Join the Useful Vision families for The Panto Company’s production of Robinson Crusoe, where the children can get close to the players and join in the fun!
