Washington Parent Carer Group
The Carers’ Centre is considering setting up a Parent Carer Group in the Washington area to start after Christmas. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Lisa Watson at the Carers’ Centre on (0191) 549 3768. Lisa is suggesting it would be on either a Monday or Tuesday morning or afternoon, at the Rainbow Centre, Concord. However, she does not want to start a group if the day, time and venue are not suitable. So please ring Lisa and let her know if you are interested, and what time and venue would suit you.
Disabled Children Consultation Event (including a FREE two hour taster session)
Following on from the Leisure event at the Stadium of Light earlier in the year and further discussion at the last Sunderland, Washington & Coalfields Parent Carer Council meeting, City of Sunderland Leisure Services are offering the following FREE taster sessions at Silksworth Community Wellness Centre. These sessions are aimed at all children in Sunderland who have a disability, special education need or long term illness (from birth to 18 years old) and their families. If your child is 18 to 25, still please feel free to pop along. No need to book – just turn up on the day. They also want to hear from you and your family about what you enjoy and what would benefit you all!

Transitions Support Group
The next meeting of the Transitions Support Group will take place on Thursday 25th October, 10.30am – 12 noon, at Sunderland Carers’ Centre, Thompson Park, Thompson Road, Sunderland SR5 1SF. The group is open to all carers of young people going through transition. Come and have a coffee and a chat about how things are for you and meet other parents in similar situations. ADHD Support Group
Are you a parent of a child with ADHD? Would you like to meet other parents? The Sunderland ADHD Support Group is run by parents themselves and they offer each other advice and support. The next meetings are on Monday 8th and 22nd October, 11.30am, at SNYP, 272 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland SR5 1DD.
Useful Vision Activities
Useful Vision have some great free activities for visually impaired youngsters and their families over the next few months:
Bounce sessions for babies and toddlers at Silksworth Tennis and Wellness Centre, Silksworth Lane, Sunderland SR3 1PD, 10am – 12 noon, Tuesday 2nd October, Tuesday 6th November and Tuesday 4th December (Bounce Christmas Party).
Fins and Flippers hydrotherapy sessions at Cedars School Sports College, Ivy Lane, Low Fell, Gateshead, NE9 6QD, 9.15am - 10.30am, Thursday 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th October. Booking is essential as places are limited.
Halloween themed fun day at Hall Hill Farm, Lanchester, Sunday 28th October. Lots of activities including Halloween fancy dress competition, scarecrow making, pumpkin lantern carving, tractor & donkey rides, puppet show and soft play. Bring your own picnic or there is a tea shop on site. Booking essential.
Half term drama workshop for visually impaired children aged 8 and over at Newcastle College, Tuesday 30th October to Thursday 1st November. All participants will put on a performance on the final afternoon for friends and families. Booking essential.

Playgroup for hearing impaired children
Does your child have hearing loss? Do you want to meet other families in the same situation? Then join the parent and toddler group for all pre-school children with a hearing impairment. It’s a chance for the children to enjoy lots of activities including outside play and for parents to have a chat over a cuppa. The next group meetings are on Mondays 15th and 29th October at Fingerpaint Nursery, Ryhope, Sunderland SR2 0LW, 1 – 3pm. For more information please contact: firstname.lastname@example.org
Autism Friendly Film Screening – Hotel Transylvania
Dimensions have joined forces with Odeon Cinemas to host an autism friendly screening of the animated film, Hotel Transylvania (U, 2D), in cinemas across the country.
What makes the screening autism friendly? The lights will be on low, the volume will be turned down, you’ll be able to take your own food and drinks and you’ll be able to move around the cinema if you like.
The nearest screening will be at the Metrocentre Odeon on Sunday 14th October at 11.30am. Tickets can be bought from the cinema, online through the Odeon website www.odeon.co.uk or by calling Odeon’s Accessibility Helpline on 0800 138 3315 between 11am and 8pm.

Changing Places Toilet at Newcastle Airport
Newcastle Airport now has a Changing Places toilet with a changing bench and hoist. The toilet is located in the Baggage Hall which is prior to going through Passport Control. The airport also hope to provide a facility ‘airside’ (after going through Passport Control) in the future.

Black History Month
During the month of October Sunderland Library Service, in partnership with Washington Art Centre and Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, will be raising awareness of Black History Month and the renewal of the Sunderland – Washington DC Friendship Agreement. Activities include:
28th September – 10th November, Washington Art Centre, Ethni City Arts Exhibition.
Saturday 6th October, City Library and Arts Centre, 2 – 3.30pm, Batik craft session. This session is free.
Saturday 6th October, Washington Town Library, 1 – 3pm, Street Dance session. This session is free.
Saturday 6th October, Washington Art Centre, Marley - a film by Kevin Macdonald (rating 15). 7.30pm. For further details please contact Washington Art Centre.
Saturday 13th October, City Library and Art Centre, 1 – 3pm, Family Learning Rangoli craft session. This session is free and suitable for children of school age and their families.

Tuesday 30th October, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens (meeting room), James Field Stansfield Guided Walk. The walk will look at some of the surviving buildings and sites in the centre of Sunderland and the East End associated with Stanfield, including the Masonic Lodge, 1.30pm.
In all libraries there will be literary displays promoting Black and Asian fiction authors and non fiction books about the Slave Trade.
World Mental Health Day (Wednesday 10th October)
Sunderland Library Service, in partnership with Community Health Trainers and the Community Nutrition Team, will be hosting mini-health MOT checks and nutritional food demonstrations at City Library and Art Centre, 10am – 2pm. This is a free event.
Also as part of World Mental Health Day, in all libraries there will be literary displays promoting mood boosting books.

Tiny Tweeties Music and Rhyme Session
Thursday 11th October, 10am – 11am, Houghton Library. This session is free and suitable for preschool children and their parent/carer.
Music and Singing Session
Thursday 18th October, 1.30pm – 2.30pm, Houghton Library. This session is provided by Lynne McAdam and is free. It is suitable for preschool children and their parent/carer.
Both these events are part of Houghton Feast Literature Festival.

Halloween Music and Rhyme Session with Tiny Tweeties
Saturday 27th October, 10.30am – 11.30am, City Library and Art Centre. This session is free and suitable for children aged up to 7 years and their parent/carer.
