Young Carer Groups
It is important for young carers to have a life outside of their caring role, so they experience similar experiences as any other child or young person would. Sunderland Carers Centre offer young carers opportunities to get a break from their caring roles through groups, outings and activities. These opportunities not only give young carers an opportunity to take time out, but to spend time with their peers who are experiencing similar home situations.
Young Carer Groups
Usually the groups start in September and young carers sign up to take part for a year, however sometimes we can fit people in if places come up or you may need to go on a waiting list. Transport is also available for groups and activities if you need it so don’t worry about how you will get there. We will look forward to hearing from you if you want to take part!
The regular group meetings are split to age specific groups and activities are adapted to suit the age ranges.
On a Saturday we have groups for 5 – 7-year-olds and 8 – 11-year-olds. They do things like cookery, arts and crafts, play on the computers and do lots of team games and activities.
We have two Weekly Evening Groups for 12 – 15-year-olds; a Tuesday Group for school years 9 and 10 and a Wednesday Group for school years 7 and 8. Each group does a range of activities including training, cookery and team building. We may also have guest speakers to introduce us to new things and sometimes we’ll all go out to the beach or ten pin bowling. The young carers plan the activities so we get to learn loads of new skills!
The weekly groups are a great way to make new friends with people from right across the city and you also get to know the staff really well who are always there if you need any help or advice.
The weekly group for 16 – 25-year-olds runs on a Thursday evening. We do a wide range of things from training, team building, cookery and lots more. The members of the group plan the activities that they would like to do, everyone is friendly and welcoming and it is a great place to get to know other Young Adult Carers (also known as YACs).
For outings and activities there is no set programme and these will vary from season to season. We have loads of really exciting trips that take place during school holidays. We have been all over the place. Trips have included bottle feeding lambs and baby goats at the farm, getting adventurous building dens and hunting for mini-beasts in the woods, running around and climbing on adventure playgrounds, getting spooky at a Halloween party and loads more!
