There are a variety of ways that you can get involved and help to support the vital work that we provide to young and adult carers in the city. Whether you can volunteer your time, skills or expertise to helping raise funds for our charity, all support or involvement is very much appreciated.

Volunteer with us

Volunteers play a valuable role within Sunderland Carers Centre. They do this by enabling us to provide additional services and activities that support carers and enable them to take a welcome break from their caring situation.

Our volunteer roles allow individuals to use their skills and knowledge, share an interest or personal hobby, or develop new skills. Volunteer hours are flexible and although we ask for some commitment, we won’t have expectations beyond what you can offer. Volunteers can claim out-of-pocket expenses, will be supported and appropriate training provided.

Our volunteering opportunities include:

Carer support (within reach)

Within Reach is a befriending / peer support programme to support those carers who are most at risk of becoming isolated and lonely due to their caring role. Within Reach volunteers will be matched to carers and provide a regular contact for a chat.

Information and advice

Information and advice play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for carers. Volunteers host information stands at various venues and events around the city.

Carer group support

Carers find it useful to meet up as a group for peer support. Volunteers provide a welcoming environment for carers, helping with teas and coffees and working with the carers to plan a programme of activities and talks.

Activity support

We provide carers with a variety of craft activities and interest talks. Volunteers who enjoy arts and crafts support this by bringing their interests and skills and developing sessions for the carers. Volunteers can lead on activities or help at sessions.

Office support

Volunteers support our ‘front of house’ staff by welcoming people into the building, making sure they sign in and are directed to where they are going. Other duties may include general office tasks such as photocopying, shredding, filing etc.

Garden volunteers

Sunderland Carers Centre has a large garden that needs continuous attention. We have a group of dedicated volunteers that come in when they can to weed, and generally tidy up. They often come as a group but also will pop in individually to ‘potter’.

Other opportunities

Sunderland Carers Centre continuously develops services for carers and other opportunities for volunteering often arise. If you would like to explore how you can support us, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator on 0191 549 3768 or email contactus@sunderlandcarers.co.uk
